Mindplay at Arena Stage is an Entertaining Trip Down Memory Lane

January 30, 2024

I like to see a show without learning too much about it beforehand.  Part of that is the element of surprise — I love to be surprised, especially when it’s a good one — and the other part is avoiding spoilers or even the chance of being subconsciously influenced by others’ opinions.

So, when I received an invitation to see Mindplay at Arena Stage, I didn’t read beyond the description of mentalist Vinny DePonto’s show that said it “blurs the line between illusion and reality. Escape into the expansive beauty of imagination and bask in the ephemeral and surprising nature of memory.”

Not only did I have no idea what a mentalist was, but the rest made the “theatrical event”  (also part of the description) sound very intriguing. I wanted to keep it that way by steering clear of any further insight.

That’s why this write-up about the show is also going to be pretty vague.  I think going into a performance of this one-man (+ a some audience participation) show without knowing what to expect is the best way to experience it.

What I will share is that it’s a fascinating, delightful, and poignant trip down memory lane. Vinny explores the mind’s inner workings and what we hold onto in our heads through a theatrical event — it’s a perfect description! — with a clever set, nostalgia-inducing props, meticulously chaotic stage direction, and mind-blowing illusions.  It will also have you thinking about, not just what you’ve seen on stage, but what you preserve in your own mind.

Oh, and mentalist… Merriam-Webster’s definition:  Mind Reader.
