I found out about Catboat Pizza Bar early last fall, right before it closed for the cold season. It sounded fantastic — pizza, boozy slushies, a scenic riverfront location, and dog-friendly policy a perfect mix for a relaxing local hang — but, alas, we couldn’t get there during its inaugural season. We finally made it on Memorial Day, shortly after it reopened for its 2025 run.
Catboat is located right on the banks of the Potomac, just off the GW Parkway between DCA and Old Town Alexandria at the Washington Sailing Marina. It’s set well off the busy road, with the open counter where you order and large wrap-around deck facing the river. If not for its sweeping, scenic views of DC, it would feel a world away from the bustling city.
It was an Instagram post that first introduced me to the spot, and you never know if something is very well edited or actually as good as it looks. So, I’m happy to report that Catboat lived up to the social media hype. Levi and I, with Teddy the pup in tow, enjoyed a nice afternoon there.
We each got a slice of pizza — pepperoni for him, mushroom for me — and a drink. We didn’t go for the slushies this time, instead a beer for him and a canned spritz for me, but we saw others enjoying their icey drinks and will definitely go for them next time. There are a few other food options on the menu: an Italian sandwich, caesar salad, popcorn, chips, and ice cream. Plus, more drink options, both boozy and non-alcoholic.
Some of the seating on the deck is covered, and we grabbed a table in that area because the sun was pretty strong at the time we were there. But it’s all open so we could still look out over the river and enjoy the views and breeze. There are a few picnic tables in the grass right by the water, and you can also BYO blanket and chairs to spread out and picnic there. Dogs are allowed everywhere, on the grass and on the deck, and Teddy was among several hanging out with their humans.
The Mount Vernon Trail runs right by Catboat, and it would be a great stop on a bike ride, run, or walk. You could also rent a kayak or SUP at Washington Sailing Marina, go for a paddle, then enjoy some hang time.
After finishing our pizza and drinks, we walked by the water and round the building. There were people of all ages enjoying the scene — families with young children, groups of adult friends, older couples. It wasn’t super crowded when we were there, but it’s sure to be a popular spot on nice summer days. We can’t wait to enjoy more of them there.
