1. Earlier this year, a group of us got together for a mahjong lesson with DCMahjCollective. We learned all about American Mahjong — the traditions, the set up, and of course, how to play. It was so confusing at first, but once it clicked, it was really fun and gratifying to play. It’s mentally challenging in a good way — you have to recognize patterns, strategize, and stay aware of what others are doing. Plus, it’s social, and something about handling the tiles is very satisfying. I highly recommend a lesson with DCMahjCollective to get started! Our group has gotten together since ours and plan to make it a regular thing.
2. Get ready for the return of National Gallery Nights! The monthly after-hours program that brings music, live performances, artmaking, pop-up talks, and more to the National Gallery of Art will be back for the fall starting September 11 with a Back to School theme. You can get creative using everyday materials in Artmaking 101, enjoy “music class” as Virginia-based band Butcher Brown plays a fusion of jazz and funk, then get to know the “new kids” (ie, recent additions to NGA’s collection). Free tickets for the event are by lottery, which opened September 1 and closes this Thursday, September 4, at 12pm.
3. Can’t wait to try Chai Pani, which just opened in the Union Market District, serving “mindblasting Indian street food.” A friend has been to the Asheville location and raved about it. Read Eater’s write-up about it here.
4. Renowned photographer Sally Mann will be in conversation with NPR host Melissa Black on Friday, September 12, at Politics & Prose (5015 Connecticut Ave. NW). The event is free, and seating is first come, first serve.
5. The KidFriendly DC annual round-up of fall festivals was just posted, and it includes plenty of events that appeal to all ages (ie, not just for families with young children). The Bethesda Row Arts Festival, Adams Morgan Day, Susquehanna Wine & Seafood Festival, and Fiesta DC are a few of them. Of course, a day on the farm can be fun for adults, too, so it’s worth giving the whole list of them of look!
6. Currently reading the novel, The Winner, on my friend Darcy’s recommendation as a good binge — and it is! Also excited about this cookbook coming out soon.
