Nine Shirtdress Styles for the Warmer Seasons

May 3, 2023

A few weeks ago I was picking up some things at Target for our Spring Break trip to Portugal (which I’ll share more about soon), and a certain dress caught my eye.  It was a shirtdress —  just like a long sleeve button down shirt, but looser looking and maxi length.  It was very cute, but not what I’d gone there to buy, and I didn’t want to get sucked down the Target rabbit hole (I know you know what I’m talking about), so I just walked on by.

But since seeing that shirtdress, I’ve been noticing them everywhere — in different lengths, cuts, colors, fabrics, styles, and prices. They’re nice and breezy for warmer weather as well as versatile, since they can be dressed up or down, worn with sandals or sneakers. And I like that they are simple, but a little more sophisticated than your typical summer sundress.  As I’ve been perusing them all online, I thought it would be fun to put together a round-up to share, so here’s a selection of shirtdresses from several different stores with something for every budget (say that 10 times fast).  And PS: I did go back to Target and tried on a few (photos above and below).

Target ($35.00): The first shirtdress I spotted, this one is a pretty basic long sleeve, long length — and sometimes basic works best. The pockets are nice, too.

J. Crew ($148.00): This looks like a simple short sleeve, but the cut seems more flattering than many shirtdresses, and the pleating at the shoulders is so pretty.  Comes in several colors, and at least one is on sale for $99.50. [Update: This is no longer sold at J. Crew, but look for it for less on Poshmark.]  (PS: I have and love it!)

Everlane ($128.00): The stripes add some fun, and the high-low style is unique. Plus, side pockets! Comes in a couple of solid colors and another stripe option.

Madewell (price varies): The double gauze is perfectly breezy for warm weather, and as they mention on the website, the buttons go all the way down, so it can also be worn as a duster.  It’s no longer available on the Madewell website, but you can find it on Poshmark — and better than its original price.

Loft ($49.00): The pockets and tie waist with a fitted style give this one more of utilitarian look that could work for the office. But take away the belt and undo a button and it’s more relaxed.  Kudos to versatility.

H&M ($39.99): The linen blend and wide stripes give it a great easy breezy feel. And the optional tie adds a little something extra.

Old Navy ($22 on sale): The slight puff sleeve to the elbow is unique among these picks.  Currently on sale, plus there are often extra promos going on at Old Navy.

Mango ($49.99 on sale): The bright tie dye is so fun and unique from the other dresses here.  It’s shown to be worn both open as a cover up and a buttoned up dress.  Very cute both ways!

Wash Lab Denim ($148.00): Maybe a tad heavy for summer, but a cool denim shirt extended to dress length had to be included here.

Had to go back and try that Target dress!

I’m pretty sure I know which one I’m getting (and not the one above).  What’s your favorite?
