Packing Recommendations for a Summer Trip to Paris

July 6, 2025

Planning what to pack for a trip to Paris might feel  a little more pressure-filled than for other destinations.  I mean, when you’re heading to one of the fashion capitals of the world, you (ie, me) have visions of looking très chic while strolling the cosmopolitan streets and sitting at charming cafés. But before you fill your suitcase with only your cutest pieces, remember that practicality matters, too — especially in summer.  The weather in Paris that time of year can be unpredictable.  When we were there in early July last year, it was very pleasant, in the high 70s and a bit cool at night; this year, there was a heatwave in late June with  temps reaching almost 100. (Note: if this is the case, the Barcelona packing list may offer better ideas.)  Not to mention, your days could include everything from museum visits to long walks though the city to lots of stairs at iconic spots to lunch at that charming café.  All that said, here are some recommendations to pack for it all that consider both function and style.

Comfy Sneakers
So important, I can’t recommend enough! Exploring Paris involves a lot of walking — sometimes I logged 30k steps a day! — so comfortable sneakers are a must. Luckily, they are a staple for Parisians, too, and you see them with just about every outfit. Opt for a go-with-everything white like the New Balance 327,  adidas sambas with light stripes,  or Vejas, which are a French brand and popular there. Colorful shoes are also a fun style choice and very in right now — like green adidas Gazelles, orange NBs, or yellow Golas.

Linen Pants
Light, loose, linen pants are great to have since they can be worn casually or dressed up, but still feel nice in warmer weather.   These wide-leg crops are fantastic, come in many colors (update: including a great contrast stitch), and seem to be flattering on everyone (I have and love).  You can’t go wrong with classic black like these that you can wear with a simple white tee or tank top during the day or a nice blouse to go out at night.  A pull-on pair is super easy and comfy. This patch pocket pair is also cute, especially in tan with the dark stitching.

Basic Tee’s & Tanks
A few solid color t-shirts and tank tops, at least one white, that go with everything should be on your packing list. Pair them with pants, skirts, or jeans, add cute sneakers or sandals, and you’re good to go.  I like this simple t-shirt from Gap — it’s soft and holds up well.   This linen blend tee is nice and airy for warm days, also in a great tank top. A v-neck is a good option, too.  And a navy and white stripe is like a t-shirt version of the classic Breton.

Pretty Blouse
I recommend a couple types of blouses…  A nice, white button down is so versatile — wear it casually over loose pants, jeans, or shorts (if it’s hot), or tuck it in for a sleeker look. Blouses with nice details are great, too — like this short sleeve or this embroidered lace button-up or a simpler, less expensive one — all for daytime or paired with black pants for nicer outfit.   This one with longer sleeves and a petty print is good for cooler nights, but still loose and flowy if it’s warm.  And this one with amazing details has, as the description says: effortless charm.

Maxi Skirt
They look nice and are so comfortable. Plus, a maxi skirt with sneakers is such a cute and chic look for Paris. A long straight linen skirt would get a lot of wear. Crisp white poplin is so summery and goes with everything. This subtle stripe is really nice but still neutral. And a bold print is so much fun.

Dress
Bring at least one dress, something in comfortable fabric that can be worn touring the sights during the day, but in a style that can easily be dressed up for evening. This navy blue linen dress looks ideal, a breezy fabric and the color works for anytime of day. This white one is very similar, but half the price. A two-tone, mixed-media, tank-skirt look is also great, especially with pockets. A mini dress like this is cute and chic, too.

Easy Jeans
Temps are often mild enough to wear jeans in daytime or evening. “Easy” styles that feel more casual, but still look smart are ideal for summer. A cropped or cuffed pair is great, and these barrel jeans are amazing (I have and love them). This pull-on pair look so comfy, too. For longer jeans, go for a baggy fit like these to stay comfortable all day or this darker wide leg pair for something more elevated for evenings.

Light Sweater
In case the nights are cool, it’s good to have something to throw on for a little warmth — just make it light.  Boden is crushing it with so many good options… like this beautiful knit cardigan (comes in a regular crew neck, too). A subtle pop of color (and crochet) on this sweater is fantastic.  Love this linen v-neck with the slightest color detail.  And how great is this one with fun embroidery details? Something neutral and oversized (and a different brand): This cozy Quince cardi can be worn with many outfits.

Comfort Sandals
Bring shoes other than sneakers for dressier outfits or just more breathable footwear — but make sure they’re comfortable. Espadrilles are classic Paris, plus they look summery but the soft, wedge sole makes them good for a lot of walking. A little sparkle elevates these FitFlops, but they’re still flat and comfy looking. There are Birkenstocks with a wedge heel, though the flat big buckle can work — just own the look. Söfft is also a well known comfort brand, and this pair is cute with good reviews.

Bag
I often recommend small crossbody belt bags for travel, because they stay close to the body and keep everything very secure (we actually saw pickpockets on the Metro). But taking summer in Paris into consideration, I’m switching it up a bit, but still keeping security in mind. A crossbody is still the best, but maybe make it bigger and make sure it zips closed. The Sak is kind of perfect in seasonal crochet with an adjustable strap, good zip close, and extra zippered pockets.  This Madewell raffia bag fits the bill and is very summer. This sling bag has all the features of the small classic, but it’s larger (which somehow makes it more stylish). I have this cute, small leather purse and it holds everything I need, plus has an adjustable strap so you can wear it on your hip or higher up.

Scarf
It’s not just a cliché — scarves really are a thing in Paris. I’ve actually been seeing them even more lately in fashion posts and articles. Wear them around your neck, in your hair, tied to your bag, even around your waist. This pretty design and neutral color are a nice balance. Great summery colors on this one — and love that it’s shown worn as a head scarf.  The two in this set have bold colors to make simple outfits pop. You can’t go wrong with black (or navy blue) and white.

Have you been to Paris in the summer? What would you add to the list?
