Local DC Travel

Mix Six: August 21, 2025

August 21, 2025

1. Earlier this summer, our family vacationed in Europe, which included a few wonderful days in London.  I’ll share more about our time there in a post soon, but one delicious highlight was a meal at Dishoom, an Indian restaurant popular with both locals and visitors.  In fact, shortly after we arrived in the city, I posted a photo on Instagram and received a message from someone who used to follow KidFriendly DC but now lives in London.  I asked her if I should keep our reservation at Dishoom in Covent Garden or do afternoon tea instead, and she said definitely keep the table.  I’m so glad we did — it was an incredible meal with tasty, unique dishes; a fun, vibrant atmosphere; and the nicest staff.

2. Hang out after-hours at Tudor Place on on August 26!  It’s a Tudor Tuesday, when the historic Georgetown estate opens from 5:30-7:30pm, welcoming visitors to explore the garden, enjoy a picnic on the lovely grounds, take a guided house tour (first come, first serve) and so some art activities such as sketching and watercolor painting (while supplies last).  Admission is a suggested donation of $5. Register in advance here.

3. The Library of Congress National Book Festival is just a couple of weeks away, happening on September 6.  It’s always a fantastic event, and I highly recommend going if you can. Works by more than 90 authors, poets, and illustrators will be showcased, and the creators themselves will be at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center for special appearances. It’s a good idea to plan ahead if there are any authors you really want to see, so take a look at the complete list of them as well as the schedule — most presentations are first come-first serve, and people line up early to get seats. The Festival runs 9am – 8pm, and doors open at 8:30am.  Admission to all of it is completely FREE!  Books and more items will be for sale.

4. Did you know that The Phillips Collection, a great off-the-beaten path art museum in Dupont Circle, offers pay-what-you-wish admission 4pm to close (5pm)?  Before that, it’s  $20/adult.  Also, if you’re a Bank of America cardholder, you get can free admission during the first full weekend of every month.  All you have to do is show your card and a valid ID when you go in.  This is part of Bank of America’s Museums on Us program, which grants complimentary entry to museums all around the country! The next free weekend is September 6-7.

5. I’m excited to watch the new Hulu series about Amanda Knox.  It’s executive produced by Monica Lewinsky (who I find incredibly impressive — smart, inspiring, reflective, resilient, and a powerful force for social change — her TED Talk is a must-listen). She has a great interview with Knox on her podcast, Reclaiming, which I also highly recommend.

6. Love the rivets — and the color!
